Music @ Carleton College

I was inspired by Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove, which is a legendary group of Chinese scholars, writers, and musicians of the third century. Accordingly, since middle school, I started to play Zhongruan 中阮, the Chinese moon guitar and also the symbol of one member of the Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove. By playing this instrument, I gained a better understanding of my national background, tradition, and culture. I am able to deeply learn ancient philosophy through music and appreciate arts within the contexts.

After I came to the states, I join the Carleton Chinese and Global Music Ensemble, where I work with many people who share the same musical interests as me. I also learn to corporate with a group of artists and manage special events. In addition, I was instructed to play with other western instruments and play pieces of music belong to various cultures around the world. This ensemble experience broadens my horizon to a wider perspective about cultures and music.
